You know, I don't think taking an old standby such as Lamaze (one of the most conventional, hospital/doctor friendly CBE courses ever) and repackaing it with new methods is effective either. Each aspiring CBE or couple should be checking in with themselves and deciding what kind of birth to support, what kind of birth they want, and where they want to give birth most. For home birth/natural birth/upright birth, forget the mainstream/older CBE models and the ones who say "meeting women with the birth they want" because NONE of these organizations come from a place of natural. They just DON'T...they come from a place of the IDEA of natural, but always with hospital/conventional/medically managed birth as a back up or likely outcome.
Instead, if one is trul passionate about birth as nature intended, one educates THE NORM, always, all the time...and sends couples/mothers on the fence to more conventional education...it would be doing them a favor.
I specifically advocate for natural birth:midwife model of care at home or birth center, and if hospital is the only option, then a very strong education of advocacy and doula availability. Also, many birth centers have pretty strict, insurance/liability driven transfer protocols, so I educate to be VERY proactive about avoiding these protocols.
IBWP (formerly ALACE), Birthing from Within, and Bradley are very centered towards atural birth...but truly no program is perfect. After being involved in birth and breastfeeding advocay for 15 years, I am starting to feel that CBE is going the way of public school...too heavy on "methods" (how can you apply a sandard when every bith is unique) and bookwork that proves ONLY that someone has book knowledge. In the end, the time tested and true "method" for teaching and supporting a natural birth is being in community with others who have naturally birthed their babies, and having multi-generational and cultural relevency involved as well. THIS is truly meeting mothers where they are in their life. It is unfortunate that there is a "forced" perception/requirement to teach/support mothers...and spend hard to come by money to become certified, in order to support a woman.

However I strongly encourage educators to place this into context and reinforce that prior to lact II women should not expect to routinely express this volume of milk quite so easily. It could be very misleading if applied to the immediate postpartum period when expressing droplets or beads of viscous milk (colostrum)is normal and sufficient.

And what if, when we have a pregnant mom who is interested in our classes, we tell her we can help and immediately ask her what she wants to know? The more we/I as an educator talk about birth as a normal, natural process without first hearing from the moms what they want to know, the more I am pre-screening out the majority of moms who don't have the time or desire to think about how they think about birth and who primarily just want help on how to get through labor and birth. Although I'm human and I do this, I keep trying to check my assumptions/hopes/perspectives at the door when I get a call, e-mail, or begin a class for expectant moms. Or, I share mine, why I feel a certain way, and then emphatically say that they are the best people to make their choices (and why they are). I give the best assistance when I'm listening rather than talking. Thanks for the neat example of different ways of looking at things.

A couple of years ago I had a conversation with an OB about how annoyed he was about a particular patient of his coming into his office with "crap printed off the internet!" My response was "Well, if you would direct your patients to take a good Lamaze class, they would come to you with up to date, evidence based information!" I then added "And if the class is REALLY good, they will likely be alot more relaxed and ask you fewer questions!" Needless to say, I get LOTS of his patients in my classes!

I find that often, pregnant women come to my class at least partly prepared through reading, bit their partners really benefit from hearing the information. It helps them understand why their partners are making the choices they are, plus they learn hands-on techniques for supporting physical, informational, and emotional support.

I think you missed the point...it is not asking which is better for birth, but rather would a teen rather be doing "teen" stuff or "mother" stuff, as a means to get the message across that life changes when you have a baby, so be careful with sex.

Terri, I don't see a problem with the use of the Lamaze name in this context, since it isn't slanderous. There is no value statement being made against Lamaze---more like a value statement that teens should not have to consider choices for motherhood yet.

It's an apples and oranges. I have taken your certification and the Dancing for Birth Certification and intend to finish both.
I am a kinesthetic learner, I like movement it calms me. The optimizing of fetal position through proactive movement anecdotal reporting made me stand up and take notice. I think everyone moving together creates more of a community on a subconscious level. There is less inhibition as it is women with women. It gives me something to do, practiced regularly, to do during pregnancy, labor and postpartum that is joyful and just feels plain good. It feels safe.
Lamaze is the gold standard. Men/partners need to be involved. But there are ancient stirrings in a group of women moving together toward a common goal, birth of Motherbaby.

That is so disturbing! My students often comment how I treat my doll so much like a real baby. When we talk about third stage I sit on the placenta and let the cord come up through my legs and just cradle and love on that little one... It would feel so wrong to me to hold a teaching doll like that! I wonder if it is indicative of the real-life attitudes toward babies at this hospital?

My first reaction was "OH MY GOD!" then I was speechless. This makes me want to HURL! (sorry, that is so not professional, and to think a hospital is using this in marketing! HOLY YOU KNOW WHAT! IF I was ever considering using this hospital, I would run the other way! FAST!
